The vast majority of people will experience some sort of back pain throughout their lives When most people think of back pain treatments, they often think of expensive medications and surgical procedures However, many would be surprised to learn that low cost methods for treating back pain are available which are quite effective Several studies have been conducted which show that getting a good amount of cardiovascular exercise on a regular basis is very effective at stopping back pain Many of these methods are low cost, such as hiking, swimming, or jogging Cardiovascular exercises have been shown to be just as effective for treating and preventing back pain as many physical therapies These activities are fun to do, and will keep both your back and the rest of your body healthy Some of you reading this article may be under the impression that this advice is common sense In reality, many people don't know how to properly exercise their backs, and give up easily when things become tough Some are already unhealthy and overweight, and have developed bad habits which are difficult to break It is important to change your mindset Instead of looking at cardiovascular exercise as a chore, incorporate it into your everday activities If you have a job which is close to your home, start riding a bike to work once a week Start small and work your way up Exercise is important for your spine and back Humans aren't designed to spend hours sitting in front of a computer or in traffic We are supposed to work out our bodies, and when we don't, problems like chronic back pain develop over time When people suffer from back pain, they often stop exercising entirely They are under the false impression that exercising their backs will put them in even more pain This is certainly true if they don't exercise properly The muscles surrounding the spinal column support your body, and need to be strong The weaker they are, the more pain you will experience By exercising, you strengthen these muscles in your back, and they will become strong enough to support your body, relieving you of pain You don't want to wait until the problem becomes so severe that you need medical treatment The costs of healthcare are increasing, and people are finding it hard to afford care The best type of treatment you can give yourself is prevention by exercising properly and keeping both your back and the rest of your body healthy

The old saying goes that "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" This applies to back pain as well 80 percent of all Americans experience back pain at one point or another and most of this pain can be prevented with a few simple steps Much pain can be attributed to the lifestyle you lead including being overweight, out of shape, prolonged computer use, driving long distances or even smoking Daily stretching and excercises can go along way towards improving your lifestyle Take the stairs on the way in to work instead of the elevator; if you don't work on the ground floor, or park further away so you can get that extra walk in Excercise does not have to be a chore Spend some time playing with your dog or lifting your children Stretching is also important That is why yoga is so recommended for back pain A few minutes of yoga every day can make a world of difference Focus on the asanas (excercises) that stretch the back of your legs and your hamstrings Stretches that focus on your abdominal muscles are also good Lifting is another area where proper technique can help you avoid problems Bend your knees and lift with your legs instead of your back It is also important to keep the object as close to you as possible to reduce stress on the back Finally, it is important to practice good posture; especially when sitting Don't slouch or slump in your chair as this puts additional strain on the back Look for chairs that are not too soft and have the proper support for the lower back

I can just imagine lying on my stomach, listening to soothing music, and falling into a deep relaxation As a college student, I often find myself stressed out over all the assignments I have to complete in school Massage is supposed to relieve anxiety and so I decided to experience it for myself It seems like there are so many different kinds of massage that at first I felt lost in a world of leisure A Swedish massage uses long fluid strokes of different pressures over the body, while toning the muscles and improving flexibility and circulation I thought this sounded very soothing Sports massages are specialized Swedish massages that help athletes keep their muscles and tissue in good condition and relax from stressful training A medical massage is a Swedish massage geared toward a certain trouble area Thai massage incorporates yoga with a light massage by stretching with gentle pressures Reflexology is an ancient Chinese technique that uses pressure points in the hands, feet, and ears to restore energy flow in the body It is supposed to flush the body of toxins, relax the muscles and stimulate internal organs I know after a long day of classes I could use some extra energy and stimulation I knew my body and mind could use a break from school, but I needed to do some research so that I knew what to expect when I went to the massage studio To prepare, I did some research on what to expect from a massage As I started to search, I was overwhelmed by an array of rules and regulations It is the job of the therapist to ask the client some standard questions to help the therapist understand the body of his or her client They will ask why you are getting a massage and for some background information about your physical condition, medical history, lifestyle, stress levels, and if you are already experiencing pain in a specific area They should discuss with you health goals that massage can help you achieve It is also appropriate to ask about the certification of the therapist and the training they went through I was then prepared to ask many questions during each massage One type of massage that I decided to experience was just a general relaxation massage I went to The Pilates Wellness Center where my instructor, Tatiana, suggested that I should get a massage in their new studio to relax my muscles after a strenuous workout Tatiana works me hard and afterwards I could often use some pampering My therapist’s name was Lorraine and she was very willing to answer all of my questions and help me with my project After my workout, Lorraine led me to the massage room To start, she asked me the standard questions that I was prepared for from my research She told me about her certification through the Florida State Massage Therapy Association as well as the training she is continuously going through Therapists are required to take classes that add up to 24 credits every two years They are under a strict regimen to continuously be up to the standards Lorraine explained that I should take off my clothes and get onto the table, under the blanket To start, I was instructed to lie on my back and put a pillow underneath my knees As part of Florida State Massage Regulations, she left the room while I undressed and got situated at the table This situation was surprisingly not awkward The therapist was very professional and made me feel comfortable with her When she came back in I was ready and excited to have my first real massage First she massaged my head, face, and ears because she was trying to get me to relax a little The therapist wanted me to get used to her hands and style before she massaged my body She told me the most beneficial massages for a client are when he or she does nothing and the therapist does everything As she mentioned this, I realized how important the setting is for a successful massage I was able to relax with the dimmed lights, comfortable table, and soothing music Next, Lorraine started on my shoulders, arms and upper body She used a cream rather than an oil to keep it less messy The cream was called BioTone that contained extracts of ivy, which relives soreness in the muscles On my arms and legs, Lorraine used a technique she called “stripping,” which is a firm stroking in one direction This technique is beneficial because muscles are made up of many fibers and when the fibers are aligned it is easier for blood to flow through and oxygen to get to the muscles This prevents cramping and tightness My right hip was stiff so it needed some extra attention and forceful kneading Lorraine explained that joints are susceptible to tightness because of the attachment of muscles to bone After my therapist had gone over my body once, she asked me to turn over At first, she concentrated on my hamstrings because I have a lot of nerve tension that makes the backs of my legs very taut It was slightly painful since the nerves are involved as well as the muscles; however, afterwards I felt much better Lorraine then moved up to my gluteus muscles She told me that butt muscles are often ignored in a massage but they are one of the most important and strained muscles we use She left the blanket over me because she explained that one of the many regulations of being a therapist is that the client must be covered at all times with the exception of the part being worked on It was a little weird having a butt massage but I definitely learned to enjoy it quickly I never realized how important my gluteus muscles are because I use them for everything I do To end, my therapist worked on my back She used a different technique called Swe-Thai, which incorporates Thai and Swedish massages As I mentioned before, Thai massage uses different pressures while stretching and Swedish massage uses long strokes to elongate the muscles She went up and down along my spine to alleviate tension After 55 minutes, my massage was finished I couldn’t get up from the table right away because I felt sleepy and extremely relaxed Now twelve hours later after my tough workout with Tatiana, my muscles don’t feel as stressed out as usual My body feels like paying $75 for a relaxation massage, which seemed standard in my research, was well worth it The second type of massage that I experienced was a sports/medical massage I went to the same massage studio as I did for the first one For some reason, over the past week my lower back had been hurting When I went in and told Lorraine this I expected her to work mostly on my back However, she explained to me that I was probably in pain because my hamstrings were tight At first, it didn’t make sense to me that my back hurt because of tense hamstrings My therapist explained that it is common for people with tight hamstrings to have sore gluteus and lower back muscles I was nervous for her to tough my achy muscles but my therapist quickly put me into the relaxation mode by “stripping” my whole body again and using some reflexology methods on my feet Lorraine explained that reflexology is really a simple massage method The feet, ears, and hands are all maps of the rest of the body Certain points correlate to different parts of the body Once the feet relax, the rest of the body follows As I turned over, I knew the pain was coming, ouch! The first technique my therapist used was a Thai massage She stretched my legs out to allow her to “work” my muscles Then Lorraine went to work with a tough Swedish massage She kneaded and “stripped” my hamstrings and calves I could tell that she was working hard and putting her whole body weight into the massage There was definitely A LOT of pain while she was massaging me but I trusted her as a professional She kneaded my muscles with a lot more force than in my first experience After she finished my hamstrings, my therapist continued up to my gluteus muscles and then my lower back She concentrated on this area until the massage was over This is what made it more of a sports massage because Lorraine focused on a certain area to relieve pain rather than just relaxing all the muscles Although my muscles felt tired and sore, my back felt much looser and under less pressure This massage was very different but ultimately achieved the same goal, to relax my tense muscles For my last massage, I decided to go to a different place and have a whole new experience I went to the Sanda Gane Day Spa for an aromatherapy massage at a price of $75 When I first got there, I was invited into a back room where massage patients are allowed to relax and talk to the therapist My new therapist’s name was Cynthia She sat down with me and we went through the standard question and answer session She introduced me to three varieties of scents that I could choose from: citrus, floral, or spicy Floral scents are used for soothing the senses, spicy for awakening them, and citrus somewhere in between I thought citrus would be invigorating after a long and tiring day Cynthia then left me in the sitting room while she prepared my massage therapy room The waiting room was really dark and had a gorgeous fountain that was bright orange with steam rising from it Beautiful bouquets of flowers were all around the room, which made me feel welcome in a new place When my room was ready, Cynthia invited me back into the treatment room She left me alone to prepare for the table while she got me a glass of water to keep me hydrated To my surprise, when I got on the table, the mattress was heated It was very relaxing upon lying down because I didn’t get that chill when you first crawl under cold sheets Cynthia came back in and I was eager to begin I could instantly smell the citrus oils she was using Since I was having an aromatherapy massage, my therapist used only Swedish massage techniques For 50 minutes, I lay there while she used long, fluid strokes all over my body I was so relaxed, I felt like I was going to fall into a deep sleep but the scented oils kept my senses awake When she told me I was done, I was disappointed it was over I felt utterly relaxed and completely loosened up I don’t think I have ever felt better in my life I feel like all of my massages accomplished the goal I had set out for in the beginning Both of my therapists were very professional and highly qualified The sports massage had the longest lasting effect because the problem areas are targeted and worked out more intensely I felt great after my first relaxation massage but a lot of the concentration was on learning about the techniques and Lorraine demonstrating them for me The aromatherapy massage was less involved and more mechanical I didn’t learn as much from the Day Spa as I did from the Wellness Center If you are feeling pain in any particular area, I urge you to get a sports massage and share with the therapist any information you can give them They will help you relieve the soreness in your muscles The American Massage Therapy Association has a list of certified therapists on their website (wwwamtamassageorg) to help you locate one in your area If you are a typical student, who is just really stressed and cannot find a way to unwind, you should try any kind of relaxation massage My whole body was suffering from the stressful effects of school The massage helped my mind and body to be calm Massage is an incredible experience and I recommend it to anyone who feels like the pressure of school has become overbearing and a threat to your wellness I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Richmond I am hoping to major in Mathematical Economics but in the meantime I am taking an array of courses, including this Expository Writing class

Okay, I admit its an inflammatory title but I feel its an issue that needs debating and it probably got your attention In 1989 the International Union of Physiological Sciences Conference debated the head-neck sensory motor systems as a factor in movement and balance As a result, over one hundred papers were written on the subject in the following three years In the editor’s preface to the publications Berthoz wrote: "The need for a thorough analysis of all aspects of head movement control is all the more important because head movements are a core element of orienting behaviour involving a number of interactive sensory and motor systems" It is therefore difficult to explain and justify the current popularity of exercises used by many therapists to promote what is known as ‘core stability’ These exercises were devised in response to the perceived problem of poor support The patient is encouraged to concentrate on using specific muscles to stabilise the core to support an area known to have a weakness The problem with this action is that it is contrary to the function of the nervous system Gerald Gottlieb, a respected scientist working in the field of motor control stresses that one of the functions of our central nervous system is to minimize muscle stress This, he argued, is why we should not override this directive by concentrating on individual muscle activation during activity Are we in danger of over doing it when we try to control the actions of specific muscles? Remember this is physiologically impossible anyway! Whilst the nervous system is in favour of minimising stress to help maintain free joint movement and reduce pressure on the internal organs, we are consciously doing the opposite Following on the back of this paper sports scientist Dr Mel Siff writes: "how can one prescribe specific set ways of recruiting muscles in any complex natural movement if research now shows that these highly deterministic patterns of muscle action are not characteristic of human movement?" and "Research into motor control has never shown that training of individual muscle actions enhances skilled complex motor activities" The maxim of "the body knows of movements, not muscles" is constantly reiterated to emphasise this fundamental point The learning of the motor skills required to execute a given sporting movement are acquired by regular practice of the movement itself, not by teaching isolated joint or muscle actions that are believed to play some contributory role in the sporting movement We should not attempt to directly control muscle recruitment for movement or exercise, it should be the thought of an act that initiates our total muscle response and the subsequent movement that determines ongoing involvement When the managing director decides to sweep the factory floor instead of staying in the boardroom making the big decisions, he interferes with the operation of the whole organisation If our innate balance mechanisms are allowed to perform their function unimpeded there is no need to consciously engage muscle or strengthen the middle of the structure independently In the absence of interference, the reflexes responding to gravity will help to ensure optimum balance and movement Mulder and Hulstyn’s research published over twenty years ago ('Sensory feedback therapy and theoretical knowledge of motor control and learning' Am J Phys Med 63:226-244, 1984) stated "Normal movement does not consist of isolated actions that are cortically controlled Rather it is a sequence of synergic movement patterns that are functionally related Besides initiating muscle activation, which produces the movement, synergies also serve to maintain equilibrium Therefore, another goal of treatment may be to improve dynamic postural and movement synergies available, decreasing the tendency for excessive and prolonged recruitment of muscle activity to stabilise posture during movement Thus, muscle re-education sequences should NOT be performed in isolated movements Instead they should be incorporated immediately into functional, goal-oriented tasks" More recently Stuart McGill PhD (Physiology) published a paper stating "The task of daily living is not compromised by insufficient strength but rather insufficient endurance After an injury it has been demonstrated that the motor system loses its fitness, and abnormal relationships of muscle activity occur Endurance training is emerging to be far more important in stabilizing the spine than strength Strong abdominal muscles do not provide the preventive or therapeutic benefit that was thought Sit ups, with knees bent or even abdominal crunches have not demonstrated any real benefit for the low back Further, pelvic tilts may actually make the low back worse There is little support for low back flexibility to improve back health and reduce the risk of future back trouble Research is demonstrating that endurance has a much greater preventive value than strength In fact, emphasis on endurance should precede specific strengthening exercise in a gradual exercise program Increasing evidence supports endurance exercise in both reducing the incidence of low back injury and as treatment This would include such daily activities as walking, cycling, swimming or repetitive low demand exercise to specific muscles Co-operative muscle activity is a necessary prerequisite to obtain the desired endurance That co-operative muscle activity is dependent on proper joint mechanical motion as is proper joint motion dependent on co-operative muscle activity" also "…spinal stability is achieved with very low levels of abdominal co-contraction, focusing on a single muscle is misguided, and that "sucking in" the TVA in fact compromises, not improves, spinal stability" So perhaps a misunderstanding of the problem has led to a short-term remedy A number of therapists are starting to question the thinking behind core stabilisation techniques as to date there is no convincing clinical evidence to prove their effectiveness Because it may appear to achieve a result and ‘feel’ good it is not surprising to find the core stabilisation theory featuring in numerous popular exercise philosophies Again Dr Siff writes: - "At the very outset, we have to dispel the belief that it is possible to focus on 'core stability' on its own Unless one's entire body is off the ground or is immersed in water, the idea of stabilising the core separate from other parts of the body is sheer nonsense, since the ability of the core in all sports in which one is in touch with a static or moving surface depends strongly on peripheral stability (the limbs)If one is carrying out some movement such as lifting weights, doing aerobics, running, jumping or playing some ground-based sport, the body stabilises as a whole, with interacting contributions from the periphery and the core… The world of core stabilisation currently remains far too heavily based in marketing and belief than in valid science " The actions encouraged to promote core stability may feel like they are strengthening the centre of our body In the absence of ‘valid science’, they appear to protect the spine because it must make sense to support the body from the centre But the theory ignores the role that limbs play in maintaining stability and the overall controlling influence of the balance and righting reflexes The few disciplines that do recognise the importance of the head, neck and back relationship resort to what they know best to ‘improve’ it - exercising the muscles of the neck! The exercises designed to achieve this have the effect of increasing interference in an area that requires none FM Alexander, founder of The Alexander Technique, looked to promote appropriate use of the head, neck and back muscles by removing the habits that prevent it This, he argued, would allow the body's innate reflexes to activate the muscles accordingly to maintain balance and support If these reflexes were not functioning resulting in poor posture, he concluded the problem lay with the near universal habit of excessive application of effort to perform even simple actions This has to be addressed firat before any other intervention to correct the problem In reality the only thing we can directly do in relation to the righting reflexes is to unknowingly interfere with their function Anthropologist, Raymond Dart, wrote: The prime factor about human body movement is that it entails the co-operation or integration of both conscious and unconscious mechanisms, ie the ‘will’ and the ‘reflex’ To achieve the level of integration necessary for optimum movement we need to prevent the conditions likely to impede this co-operation If the amount of effort applied to a task is excessive, the resulting muscle activity is likely to interfere with the reflex by reducing sensitivity Activation of the reflex could either be delayed or even totally restricted When the reflex is finally activated, movement is limited due to the reduced capacity of a shortened muscle to contract further or its inability to lengthen when required Alexander stressed that if we stop doing the wrong things the right things take care of themselves If we learn to stop stiffening the neck, the head will ‘find’ its own balance and bring about the most appropriate muscle tone for the current situation to facilitate our innate righting reflexes As we do not know what the optimum tone should be for each muscle it is not something we should try to achieve Activities performed with minimal interference with our balance mechanisms will ensure the most appropriate muscle response Good quality movement promotes the right type of conditioning and removes the need for additional ‘specialist’ exercises So how do we attain good movement in order to get into shape? First we need to establish what it is we have been doing to get out of shape, and then we have to learn to stop doing it before we attempt anything else Roy Palmer is a teacher of The Alexander Technique and has studied performance enhancement in sport for the last 10 years In 2001 he published a book called 'The Performance Paradox:Challenging the conventional methods of sports training and exercise' and is currently working on a new project about The Zone More information about his unique approach to training can be found at wwwfitness-programs-for-lifecom

Energy – the natural resource in shortest supply, especially for the 100 million Americans who are suffering from chronic or incurable illness Just thinking of everyone who needs you can sap out what little energy you have left Maybe you feel like you can’t possibly get it all done But you know you HAVE to People depend on you everyday Your family Your friends Your coworkers Your clients Even your pets! To meet the demands of life today, you can’t afford to have your energy depleted So here are some ways to easily boost those levels right away 1 Aerocize I was speaking with a friend yesterday who has Lyme disease He is so ill he literally cannot exercise He was depressed I suggested he go out his door (get as bundled up as necessary) and close the door Take in deep breaths for 10 minutes He could not believe how much better he felt If where you are is smoggy, or if there is no way you can get outside, get an air purifier and you will have the benefits of the negative ions anyway 3 Exercise is the energy creator Move your body, no matter how little If you cannot even move your ankle or wrist joints around in circles, imagine yourself doing it You know you need it, so why fight it?

Hernia repair is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures worldwide In fact, there are over 600,000 hernia repair surgeries performed each year in the US alone A hernia is a weakness or defect in the abdominal muscles which can result in the protrusion of tissue through an opening in the outer layers of the abdominal wall Hernias can develop at any part of the abdominal wall, but generally occur in areas that have a natural tendency to be weak These areas include the groin (inguinal hernias), umbilicus (umbilical hernias), hiatus (hiatal hernias) and incisions from previous surgeries (incisional or ventral hernias) While hernias generally do not pose serious long-term health problems, they can cause severe pain and discomfort for those suffering from this condition Hernias may be present from birth, or can be caused by strain on the abdominal muscles In either case, hernias do not go away by themselves and depending on the degree of bulging or pain, generally require a surgical procedure to be repaired Hernia repairs are usually done on an elective basis, which means that the patient and physician decide whether or when the procedure should be performed Emergency procedures are only done for strangulated hernias, which are hernias that have become pinched to the point that the blood supply is cut off These hernias require immediate medical attention since they can become infected and lead to a life threatening condition very quickly Hernias are typically repaired through a surgical procedure called herniorrhaphy, in which the surgeon repairs the hole in the abdominal wall by sewing surrounding muscle together or by placing a patch called “mesh” over the defect Most surgeons make an incision at the site of the hernia in order to gain access to the defect, although some surgeons prefer to do these procedures laparoscopically During a laparoscopic hernia repair, the surgeon makes very small incisions to pass through specialized instruments and an endoscope, a device that allows the surgeon to see the abdominal area without opening the patient up Laparoscopic hernia repair generally results in less postoperative pain and recovery time than open surgery There is still a great deal of controversy over the long-term benefits of laparoscopic hernia repair, however, and it is by no means an option for every patient The use of surgical mesh to repair hernias is gaining in popularity with surgeons Most meshes currently on the market are made from synthetic materials such as polypropylene, polyester, silicone or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), commonly known by the DuPont brand name Teflon® While these meshes have good strength characteristics, they remain in the body as permanent implants and sometimes can cause adverse reactions when the surrounding tissue identifies these materials as foreign bodies In order to avoid adverse reactions to synthetic materials, some surgeons prefer to use meshes made of biomaterials which are gradually resorbed by the body over time and are then eliminated through biological processes Since these meshes are not permanent implants, they generally only offer temporary repair of abdominal wall defects and additional surgical procedures are sometimes required to replace the absorbed mesh An alternative to synthetic and absorbable mesh is human tissue There are a handful of companies that are now marketing processed, freeze-dried human dermis for soft tissue repair and augmentation This material is implanted using the same technique as other meshes and provides for revascularization, cellular ingrowth and “remodeling” into the patients tissue While this option generally provides a permanent repair with few adverse reactions, the processing and distribution of human tissue is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as are most other products that are implanted in the human body In fact, there have been a number of recent cases of serious infections and even deaths resulting from the implantation of human cadaveric tissue during surgical procedures New technologies have recently been developed to solve the problems associated with the use of synthetic substances, absorbable materials and human tissue in hernia repair procedures Scientists in Europe have been conducting research and development into alternatives to these products over the past two decades and have made major breakthroughs in this area over the past several years New ways of collecting and processing natural materials have led to a series of products that offer the strength of synthetic compounds, the biocompatibility of biomaterials and the regenerative properties of human tissue What material can offer all of the benefits of the previously mentioned products without the corresponding disadvantages? Porcine dermal collagen has an architectural structure very close to human tissue, and is therefore readily recognized as friendly by the human body A leading medical technology company in Europe has developed a patented process by which a sheet of porcine dermis is converted into a safe and effective surgical implant for soft tissue repair and augmentation The process, which takes several weeks to complete, removes all non collageneous material from the sheet except elastin, and stabilizes the material through a cross-linking process The result is an acellular, non reconstituted, non allergenic membrane which has excellent strength characteristics, is completely biocompatible and provides a permanent solution for the repair of abdominal wall defects Since the material itself is a byproduct of the meat packaging industry, it is more readily available than human tissue In addition, the harvesting and processing of the material is strictly regulated by local government, as well as international directives and quality standards This collagen surgical implant has been used in Europe for these types of procedures for several years and there is strong clinical evidence of the safety and effectiveness of the product In fact, the implant has been approved for sale in the US by the FDA and there have not been any adverse reactions reported after several thousand implantations in Europe Not only is it safe, since the structure of the collagen is so similar to human tissue, once it is implanted the sheet provides the basis for cellular ingrowth and revascularization This results in a permanent fix in even the most difficult cases In addition to the positive clinical outcomes, surgeons like the fact that they do not need to change their surgical technique to use this product They can use the same exact same steps they would use for synthetic or absorbable surgical mesh in both open and laparoscopic procedures Only physicians can properly diagnose and appropriately treat hernias However, patients have the right to actively participate in decisions that affect their health or quality of life Information about the various treatment options that are currently available can play an important part in the discussions between patients and their physicians regarding the best surgical treatment option for them About The Author Joseph R Lopez is the Executive Director of BioSurgical Innovations, Inc, a privately owned sales, marketing and distribution company that focuses exclusively on new technologies in biomaterial implants, biosurgical devices and complementary products for a number of surgical specialties These products are designed to interact with living tissue and have the capacity to improve procedural efficiencies for surgeons and enhance the clinical outcomes and quality of life for their patients BioSurgical Innovations’ sells its products through a distribution network that covers Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as key accounts in the US For additional information, contact: BioSurgical Innovations, Inc Tel: 954-331-8044 Fax: 954-331-4601 http://wwwbsurgicalcom jlopez@bsurgicalcom

Using ice to treat injuries is one of the oldest methods of pain control Proven to be safe and effective at reducing swelling, relieving pain and decreasing muscle spasms, ice therapy is an easy self-care technique that anyone can administer Every mother knows to put ice on a bruised knee after a soccer game or on a teething toddler’s tender gums But do you really know how ice works? Cold therapy, also known as cryotherapy, works on the principle of heat exchange This occurs when you place a cooler object in direct contact with an object of warmer temperature, such as ice against skin The cooler object will absorb the heat of the warmer object Why is this important when it comes to cold therapy?

Orthotics are orthopedic devices that are used to treat a variety of biomechanical foot disorders Whenever a person's foot is not functioning as designed, the weight of the body is not properly transferred and distributed As a result, pain and tenderness can develop in the foot, ankle, and the surrounding muscles Orthotics work to relieve pain by realigning and supporting the ligaments and bones of the foot properly, so that the foot can function as normal Orthotics are can be made of any number of materials and range greatly in terms of price, effectiveness, and ease of availability Simple orthotics, such as the shoe insoles and gel heel cups sold in general goods stores, are inexpensive and widely available These over-the-counter orthotics can relieve mild foot discomfort by taking excess pressure off of sensitive areas of the foot They are relatively ineffective, though, at treating moderate to more severe foot disorders The next step-up in orthotics are custom-tailored devices that are specifically designed to meet the needs of the particular individual Such orthotics usually require a doctor's prescription since an impression of the foot, called a cast, needs to be made in order to identify those areas of the feet that are out of alignment The resulting cast is sent to an orthotic laboratory so that a custom device can be produced to correct any misalignments The orthotic is then fitted to the patient's shoe to help keep the foot properly aligned Since perfectly aligned feet are uncommon, nearly everyone stands to benefit from the use of an orthotic device Orthotics can rarely cause harm to the foot Instead they both prevent and alleviate any number of foot disorders that cause pain, fatigue, or discomfort in individuals who are otherwise happy and healthy The extent to which your foot is maligned will determine the exact type of orthotic best suited for your foot How do you know if you may need an orthotic? Consider the following symptoms: One side of the sole of your shoe typically wears out faster than the other side (the soles of your worn shoes are not flat) Your feet point inward or outward more than normal when you walk You have frequent heel, ankle, knee, hip, or lower back pain You frequently sprain or twist your ankle You have flat feet or feet with a high arch Your shins frequently hurt or ache Your toes are crooked Your feet generally hurt after you spend more than a few moments standing on them If you have one or more of these symptoms, you may be a good candidate for an orthotic device Keep in mind that pain is your body's way is signaling you that something is wrong Sore feet are no exception to this rule Ignoring pain can intensify problems and lead into much more serious disorders, so it is important to find the underlying cause for your foot pain Contact your local podiatrist to set up an appointment for an initial exam and find out if orthotics are right for you
