If one of your priorities in life is to keep in shape physically and mentally then yoga is the answer Yoga is practised by millions of people and is on the increase daily How many to be precise is hard to say but a calculator would struggle to keep up with the figures This exercise has become a way of life for many people who can not do without their intake of this healthy type of regime Yoga is a comforting and enjoyable where routines are followed consisting of poses and bodily postures that give the body a healthy look and feel An additional bonus to yoga is you get to unwind/relax while at the same tending to your body needs Without doubt it is known to ease stress and research behind the scenes of yoga discovered that certain illnesses have been calmed for those who practice this exercise Disorders namely anxiety, blood pressure, back pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and many more have been controlled by a yoga way of life Other sicknesses that have come under threat of being eased or even abolished are arthritis, chronic fatigue, headaches People have found it has a strong influence on reducing asthma It is no wonder why this routine is practised on a regular basis with the positive effects it has on ailing patients Now that the benefits have finally been recognised it is becoming a phenomenal craze and why wouldnt it when the rewards are greater than that of winning the lottery No amount of money can buy a content mind - healthy body and soul Pleasing experiences generated from yoga is the sense of well being where stress is eased and forgotten while you lapse into a sedate frame of mind Reasons why people have chosen to take up yoga are because of how it helps tone muscle/flexibility and strengthens stamina pace Obese participants understand how beneficial it is helping them to burn off excess fat without the demand tactics like that of a strenuous assault course Yoga and concentration are a very compatible twosome, if working hand in hand it helps to improve creativity The positive side to yoga is where it gives you control in tending to your body needs naturally instead of turning to medicinal pills (Depending of course of your condition) Yoga is as positive as you can get Keeping your body fit is important so a healthy blood circulation is imminent to keep organs and veins functioning properly Your immune system if stimulated is a force strong enough to fight sickness Yoga and how it affects each individual differs greatly but does it matter as long as it leads to a healthier life? Psychological, mental and physical sicknesses are just a few main factors why people are joining in the fun of yoga and claiming control over their health Forget any belief you may have that yoga is a religious activity, quite the opposite in fact You and yoga a match made in heaven In a nutshell - in sickness and health

I have been traveling a bit and have noticed in many suburb cities that flood retention basins in those areas often have a park like setting and are put in the lowest part of the neighborhood meaning that is where the water flows too Now then when we allow these areas to receive the floodwaters and put in them soccer fields, playground equipment where Mosquitoes will spawn and flourish are we not inviting bites? The reason I make this issue is the 39 deaths this year from West Nile Virus 3-4 people are expected to die each week this year from West Nile Virus and it has already started Folks this is serious We need to spray these areas of artificial flood retention areas Surely with Winter coming and these low areas we are going to see Mosquitoes We need to make sure there is funding in Suburban America where there are Mosquito will congregate as our children play 3-4 people dieing every day For God Sakes not the kids We complain about the Troops being attacked in Iraq, but we could have a much more serious smaller problem here And as far as I can see the Sierra Club is promoting the right to life by rare breeds of Mosquitoes in Wetlands, considering them a species However the Mosquitoes have been around for over 400 million years and next to the Cucaracha are probably the most successful species to ever cruise the Planet Let's be smart about this issues, it is serious and growing How do I know? Why do I care

This must be a mistake! How could his drug costs rise from $150 a month to $1101 in just three weeks? My hands shook while I read the pharmacy bill There was no mistake The bill I held recorded the drugs ordered by my fathers Alzheimers' care unit In only three weeks at this eldercare facility, his drug expenses had soared an incredible 734% Ironically, his quality of life had plunged about the same percent Walking and talking when he entered, he now spent his days confined to a wheelchair, unable to walk, drugged into a persistent stupor "I've got to do something" The thought haunted me all day Then, that evening, an incidental trip to the grocery delivered the help I needed It came in the form of a thick paperback book, The PDR Pocket Guide to Prescription Drugs (PDR Pocket Guide) The PDR Pocket Guide provides tons of information for all prescription drugs on the market when it was printed Specifics include: generic equivalents, why the drug is prescribed, how it should be taken, when it should not be taken, side effects and special warning, and possible interactions with other drugs and food The PDR Pocket Guide is available through Amazoncom, or you might find a copy like I did at your local grocery or bookstore Jam-packed with almost 1700 pages of information, this paperback is a surprisingly affordable $699 Using the pharmacy's bill as a list of medications, I read the PDR report for each drug my father was using What I found astonished me Two of fifteen drugs prescribed were being used "off-label" (not FDA approved for the condition it is used to treat) One of those was specifically contraindicated for use with Alzheimer's patients Two more were from drug families that I had previously identified as causing allergic reactions in my father When I was young, my father used to kid me by saying, "Up with this I will not put!" Up with this I wasn't about to put either, so I called his doctor "My father is allergic to Furosemide" He bristled "Where did you get an idea like that?" "Furosemide is a sulfa drug He's allergic to sulfa drugs" "I never heard anything like that about Furosemide," he barked "Who told you that?" "The PDR Pocket Guide" "Well, the PDR has a lot of stuff you don't need to know" His arrogance grated on my nerves "No more Furosemide" Now I wasn't asking, I was demanding "You've seen his rash He didn't have it when he came to the care unit" "You're not qualified to say what he should or should not have" "What am I doing," I wondered, "arguing with a doctor who should be helping?" I wish I'd spoken the words I thought next "Bye-bye! You're fired!" But, in that moment, I resolved to be fully in control of all my father's drugs I would learn everything I could and provide drugs direct to the facility or not There would be no more ordering drugs without my specific authorization I enlisted the expertise of a pharmacist I found just down the street She graciously took time from her crowded day to answer all my questions and explain anything I didn't understand She took a brief history of my father's illness, made note of his allergies, and offered money-saving suggestions She focused on providing excellent service In short, she was, and is, an angel I immediately began to look for another physician to take over my father's care, but I was too slow Within a few weeks, my father died of complications from a massive insulin overdose Was my experience unusual? Probably not, according to a study from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) On the subject of the increased cost of pharmaceuticals for people over-65, the study's author, Marie Stagnitti, MPA, reports: Every year from 1997-2000, the average out of pocket expense for prescription medicines for those with a purchase and age 65 and older was more than three times as high as the average out of pocket expense on prescription medicines for those with a purchase and under age 65 The potential for overmedication in the elderly is clear in Stagnitti's chart showing an average 235 prescriptions in both 1999 and 2000 for the over-65 group that used prescription drugs The number of prescription drugs used by the under-65 group seemed high to me as well: 95 for 1999 and 101 prescriptions for the year 2000 Overmedication is not only crushingly expensive for our elderly, it represents a real and present danger You can do something about it Please, learn about and oversee medications You will help elders save money You might even save a life About The Author A native Texas, Phyllis Staff lives in Dallas with her family She is a writer and photographer whose work has appeared in scholarly journals and popular magazines She is the CEO of thebestisyetnet (http://wwwthebestisyetnet) and author of How to Find Great Senior Housing: A Roadmap for Elders and Those Who Love Them (2nd edition) pando19@direcwaycom

We have all suffered from an occasional case of bad breath It's estimated that 50 to 65 percent of the population suffer from bad breath A few unfortunate people suffer from chronic bad breath, seeming never to get rid of the foul odor that escapes every time they open their mouth But what is the main cause of bad breath? Like all living organisms, we have a variety of other organisms that live in or on us in a constant balance of life In case of bad breath, the main cause is the bacteria that normally occur within your mouth; or more specifically the waste products these bacteria produce from their normal biological life Life of Bacteria in Your Mouth Your body is a host to billions of bacteria, and the majority of them are beneficial to you; there are bacteria in your stomach which aid food digestion, there are helpful bacteria on your skin which protect you against other harmful bacteria, and there are bacteria that just love the environment of your mouth The last type is called anaerobic bacteria Anaerobic bacteria live best in conditions where there is no oxygen There are plenty of places for anaerobic bacteria to live in your mouth; under the gum line, on the back of your tongue, between the teeth, and just about any place in your mouth that may be covered by a thin film It is the waste products of the anaerobic bacteria that cause bad breath Again, a person's mouth is home to hundreds of different species of bacteria There is a constant battle going on in your mouth at all times A battle for living space between that cause bad breath and those that don't The precise balance between these types of bacteria, determines the freshness of your breath How Do They Cause Bad Breath? Through normal living process, these bacteria produce waste products in your mouth The most common of these are volatile sulfur compounds with very unpleasant odor These compounds are referred to as "volatile" because they readily evaporate when exposed to air under normal temperatures This volatility of these compounds can offend those around you very quickly While these volatile sulfur compounds are principal factor of bad breath cause, the anaerobic bacteria produce numerous other compounds that also have such offensive odors They include: Cadaverine - creates the smell associated with corpses Putrescine - causes the odor of decaying meat Skatole - has the characteristic smell of human feces Isovaleric Acid - produces the smell of sweaty feet What Do Anaerobic Bacteria Eat?

If you suffer from severe osteoarthritis, surgery may be in store for you Surgery is no small choice, and doctors and the surgeons they work with are naturally reluctant to operate unless you meet criteria that they consider important Two of the key factors that all surgeons probably consider are the life-expectancies of the artificial joint and of you Historically artificial joints last about 15 to 20 years New technologies may extend this, but there's really no one offering a guarantee that this will be so For the new technologies, the long-term data just isn't there yet (That's why it's called "new") Doctors call the replacement of an artificial joint gone bad a "revision" And revisions are sometimes more difficult than the original operation This also forms one more cause for reluctance in treating younger patients There seem to be two models that doctors and the surgeons they work with go by Model 1: Age and pain intensity In this model, the age is a critically important factor If you're expected to live, on average, to age 75 or 80, and the joint is only going to last 15 years, surgeons using this model will be reluctant to operate until you're 65 years old The other parameter is pain intensity No matter how old you are, if you need the replacement because the pain is just unbearable, many (most?) physicians will agree to operate Model 2: Add "life style" In this model, the factors of the first model are still considered, but to them is added the question of whether you're sacrificing your life right now in order to have some kind of "ideal state" when you're 65 This is clearly a subjective area for both the patient and the doctor, but in many cases, the evidence is so overwhelmingly clear that the call for a replacement of the joint is considered very reasonable And there are clear advantages to getting the artificial joint while you are younger * Generally, you're better able to withstand surgery when you're younger than when you're in your latter years * Assuming the operation and recovery go well, you'll have years of a better life that you can look back on when you're older - even if at that time you get sidelined because a revision isn't possible * Technology is improving all the time By the time you need a revision (assuming that the newer materials do wear out in 15 to 20 years), the procedures may be in place to make revisions much easier to successfully perform Concluding Remarks This article is a clarion call for arthritis patients to be advocates on their own behalf and to have a discussion of the effects that your arthritis is having on your life If you are severely restricted in what you can do, if your family is suffering so as to compensate for your pain, and if you can imagine what it would be like for you to see your loved ones in pain and know that this is what they feel about you right now, then it may be past due for you to have this conversation And if your physician and surgeon will not take lifestyle as an important factor, seek out a second, third and fourth doctor who will For More Information on Arthritis visit:http://wwwhealthybodysupplementscom This is NOT a call for unnecessary or ill-advised surgery It is a call for a very important discussion that you should have with your doctor

Despite what you may have heard, memory loss is not an inevitable part of aging - in fact, it is possible to enjoy good long and short term memory at any stage of life It's just a matter of keeping your mind active and engaged If, however, you do happen to find that things are slipping your mind more than they used to, here are some factors to consider How busy are you? If you are working yourself ragged, there may be little mental energy left over to deal with other tasks The result is memory loss - or, at least, you may feel as though you are experiencing memory loss In reality, you may just be overextending yourself You might not be able to pay attention to detail if you simply have too many details to think about Everybody's mind needs - and deserves to get - a break now and again! To deal with this type of memory loss, try giving yourself a break The human mind is very self-protective, and possibly you are 'spacing out' because you have more than enough to do already! If you're convinced that your memory loss is due to something other than just simple overwork, however, there are other measures you can consider For example, it is very helpful to have a regular routine, and a regular place to put things around the house If you always put your keys in exactly the same place when you come home, there is little chance that you will lose them or forget where they are If you always follow the same routine, it gets imprinted on your mind as time goes on You are less likely to experience much memory loss if you are organized and have a regular routine In fact, this is true for everyone, completely regardless of age! We all benefit from having an orderly, relatively clutter-free existence Reinforce your organization by writing notes and lists Because writing involves a large muscle group, it helps ideas become fixed in your mind, minimizing memory loss And then, of course, the notes or lists themselves are invaluable - they provide written records of your day, as well as being directives Writing things down is the classic way to avoid memory loss, and it still works just as well as it ever did Memory loss is not inevitable, regardless of what you may have heard Many people enjoy excellent memory well into their seventies, eighties or nineties
