(NC)-In most cases insect bites are harmless and if left alone, the irritation will subside within 48 hours However, for some people, particularly children, scratching bites may lead to a highly contagious bacterial skin infection called impetigo Left unchecked, impetigo can spread to other parts of the body and even from person to person As a family physician, I recommend the following tips to ensure you and your family maximize your summer fun and avoid this irritating skin disease: Apply an effective insect repellent as directed As an alternative to chemical-based repellents, I recommend citronella-based products such as Natrapel®, particularly for young children Avoid scratching To calm the itching, traditional products such as calamine lotion may be useful I also recommend my patients use AfterBite®, a product designed to neutralize the allergens that cause the itch Keep fingernails short and clean The bacteria streptococcal, which causes impetigo, hides under fingernails and enters the body when scratching the bite Children are more vulnerable to this disease because streptococcal is often found in sand piles where kids play Recognize the symptoms Impetigo is characterized by a red bump on the skin where yellow pus accumulates and dries, leaving a scab that can be itchy Protect the infection Impetigo spreads easily through direct body contact, sharing towels, bedding and clothes Although it is not a serious disease, it needs immediate attention to stop it from spreading Seek treatment The best way to avoid impetigo is to treat a bug bite as soon as possible Should impetigo develop, oral antibiotics and antibiotic creams may be required as prescribed by your doctor Dr Brian Aw is a general practitioner, specializing in travel medicine For tips on bug bite prevention and product information visit: wwwtendercorpcom/canada Editors: These articles are for use in Ontario only About The Author News Canada provides a wide selection of current, ready-to-use copyright free news stories and ideas for Television, Print, Radio, and the Web News Canada is a niche service in public relations, offering access to print, radio, television, and now the Internet media, with ready-to-use, editorial "fill" items Monitoring and analysis are two more of our primary services The service supplies access to the national media for marketers in the private, the public, and the not-for-profit sectors Your corporate and product news, consumer tips and information are packaged in a variety of ready-to-use formats and are made available to every Canadian media organization including weekly and daily newspapers, cable and commercial television stations, radio stations, as well as the Web sites Canadians visit most often Visit News Canada and learn more about the NC services

You know the feeling You're working in front of your computer and you feel that all-too-familiar tightness beginning to squeeze your neck It's a sign that a tension headache is coming on The next time that happens, don't reach for the Advil Do the behind-the-back stretch instead It can be done sitting or standing If you're going to sit, make sure you have a chair with backing that comes halfway up your back Hook your arms over the back of the chair and pull your shoulder blades together If you're standing, assume the military position: head up shoulders back stomach tight As you do this, make sure you stick your chest out As this is very important, you should exaggerate a little bit - and make sure you keep you head up, too Pull your shoulder blades together until you feel a pull in your shoulder joints Don't go overboard on this; you don't want to cause any pain Now hold this stretch for three full minutes (don't cheat and quit early; the length of this stretch is very important) At the end of this stretch, you should feel your back muscles loosen a bit; you may even feel a warm rush of blood up the back of your neck Take breaks throughout the day to perform this stretch - it will help a lot! Paul Bacho is a certified athletic trainer in Cleveland, Ohio with over 27 years treating patients with chronic pain He's also co-author of "How to Get Permanent Relief From Chronic Tension Headaches," a holistic program that he's used to help hundreds of people get rid of tension headaches For more information, visit his site at http://wwwtensionheadachescom

Excerpted from the book "Your Right to Be Beautiful: How to Halt the Train of Aging and Meet the Most Beautiful You" by Tonya Zavasta The book is available at: http://wwwbeautifulonrawcom Jean Kerr, American author and playwright wrote: "I'm tired of all this nonsense about beauty being only skin-deep That's deep enough What do you want an adorable pancreas?" Jean Kerr was closer to the truth than she might have realized Every outside organ of the human body is eligible to be called beautiful, but because internal organs are ordinarily seen only by surgeons, they get excluded from the beauty contest If our internal organs were observed, we would describe them in terms of attractiveness, and normal color and shape would be considered beautiful You need only compare pictures of normal healthy internal organs with pictures of their infected and diseased counterparts in the medical books to convince yourself that health and beauty are synonymous A healthy colon looks like evenly braided muscles On the other hand, unhealthy colons are deformed: twisted and looped in some parts, ballooned and engorged in others, as revealed by barium X-rays Visit a colon therapist, if only to observe the pictures of unhealthy colons and see for yourself how ugly one can be on the inside The blood of a healthy person is also beautiful The red blood cells are uniformly round The blood of a body full of toxins is contaminated with pathological bacteria, abnormal proteins, and parasites When red blood corpuscles clump together, the condition is called Rouleau or "sticky" blood Rouleau, this clumpy, unattractive blood, appears 5 to 20 years before symptoms of illness present themselves It is an early messenger of hundreds of degenerative diseases Conglomerates of red blood cells cannot access the fine capillaries of the body Rouleau is particularly damaging to the organs of the head, in particular the eyes, ears, and scalp A diet high in meat and dairy products increases the stickiness of your platelets Blood that becomes sticky is a sure precursor of blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks The arterial pipelines in a healthy circulatory system are clean and clear from obstructions In healthy arteries, the inner lining, called the intima, is smooth, supple, and without cracks A cross-section of a normal coronary artery shows no arterial thickening or blood-blocking plaque deposits An unhealthy circulatory system paints an entirely different picture The middle muscular layer of the artery can no longer fully recoil after a pulse wave has expanded the vessel Elasticity of the artery walls is reduced, and cracks and hollows appear They catch calcium, cholesterol deposits, fat accumulations, and clusters of platelets Cholesterol deposits roughen the inner surfaces and damage the walls of the arteries At first, plaque build-up does not cause discomfort--it is just ugly But later, thick, clogged bloodstream results in coronary arteries becoming occluded with fatty buildup, which effects circulation and causes deterioration of the connective tissues Deterioration and abnormal hardening of the arteries result in a process called arteriosclerosis and may cause heart disease, stroke, and hypertension The body often displays real ingenuity faced with substances it cannot metabolize or eliminate It breaks them down and distributes them to remote areas of the body away from vital organs to minimize harm The body takes the poisons out-of-the-way but not necessarily out of sight The toxic wastes are pushed towards the peripheral organs, which happen to be the skin and every other organ that we can see on the outside External deformities are direct manifestations of internal pathologies Ugly ropes of varicose veins, puffy faces, and cellulite are telling tales about your inside condition Every pimple, psoriasis, or pigment change on your skin is in fact a reflection of some organ struggling to do its job Every bulge, boil, or swelling is a sign that the body is pushing out some toxins in its effort to protect itself The term "natural beauty" has been misused and abused beyond restoration Because there is no natural beauty without 100% natural food, the beauty that will emerge on the raw food diet I call Rawsome Beauty Our external beauty is at its best when our internal organs are in the best possible shape, form, and color Beautiful is not something extra the body needs: to be beautiful both inside and out is the natural state of one's body The vitality of internal organs, working properly, transcends your skin and brings a radiance to your face This is when beauty does penetrate the skin So when we admire sparkling eyes, fabulous skin, and lustrous hair, in a way we are admiring the teamwork of a healthy liver, colon, kidneys, etc How profound the direct meaning of the phrase "beauty comes from within" really is Health and beauty are considered to be chronological losses In my books I will convince you they don't have to be It is biologically possible to look beautiful at any age I intend to prove that beauty is not an accident; beauty is your birthright, it can be yours through the right daily choices, food you put in your mouth being the most important one You can dramatically improve your appearance and do it 100 percent on your own without expensive products, plastic surgery or costly cosmetics

BE HER "GAY BEST FRIEND" Then pounce It's a cliché because there's truth in it: gay men get closer to women in a way that the average hetero guy just doesn't Here's how it works :- 1 OPEN YOUR EYES Like women, gay men are sticklers for detail - and no gay man would fail to notice a woman's hairdo/shoes/earrings, or to compliment her on them But don't simply say that her new dress is "nice" - tell her its a fantastic color and looks expensive A detailed compliment sounds much more genuine than a general one 2 EMPATHIZE Straight men don't do empathy That's because, unlike sympathy, its hard work It requires you to put yourself in someone else's shoes to understand their feelings And gay men are masters at it If a woman cries, a straight man will pat her on the back; a gay pal will join her in the wailing - and sometimes that's exactly what a woman wants 3 DROP THE MACHO ACT Chest-beating may impress your male peers, but it doesn't work with women In fact, one of the main reasons women and gay men get on well is because of their shared loathing of aggressive macho posturing That's why, when confronted with a violent situation, 80 % of women say they'd walk away or negotiate the situation rather than get stuck in 4 EXPRESS YOURSELF Facial expressions are integral to the way gay men (and women) communicate According to Alan Pease, co-author of Why Men Don't Listen And Women Can't Read Maps, women use six listening expressions every 10 seconds, while men only have one Study her expressions and try to copy them 5 LET DOWN YOUR GUARD Stoicism may well be an effective male self-defense mechanism, but it's as boring as hell to women Vulnerability, on the other hand, is sexy Gay men have always known this So next time you're with a woman, drop the stiff-upper-lip act - be bold and say that sometimes you can't cope and burst into tears Then let her pull you close to her breast 6 BLINK According to the Families Social Capital Research Group, the absence of any sexual agenda with gay men boosts women's self-esteem - they feel valued for their personality Men, however, are programmed to nipple-gaze, which tend to reveal your true intentions So, to disguise your interest, flutter your eyelids

I was reviewing an ebook on vinegar remedies and uses recently, and came across some surprising assertions Despite the ebook author claiming that vinegar was not a cure all, the list of complaints vinegar supposedly fixed was astounding Almost as astounding as the rationale behind using vinegar to fix said complaints Apart from the evils of satisfying one's 'debased' taste buds over nourishing the body - which is apparently the cause of all of modern man's ills The author suggest we start looking to 'natural resources' that have been used in the days before Christ Apparently that was a bit of a turning point nutritionally Anyway, sunshine, water and air aside, its all herbs, honey, and homebrews These are the antidote to the 'unnatural chemical compounds' that are plaguing us Hmmm - that must be why we our ancestors lived about double the life span that we do Oh, I'm sorry, its we who live on average twice as long as our ancestors It would be lovely if we could explain away the plethora of chronic and acute illnesses that affect so many people There is no doubt that in some cases nutritional choice has played a causative or aggravating factor in a person's ill health But people who follow very healthy, natural diets also get sick People who exercise still have heart attacks The answer is not always simple, nor is it always to be found by glorifying folk remedies or taking complex Oriental classification systems and treatments out of context Which is not to say there is not some value, for certain things, in either traditional medicine, or folk remedies But giving herbal treatments, or folk remedies, the veneer of pseudo science, does not help anyone The author of this ebook stated that 'a number of outstanding authorities' have proven the 'therapeutic' value of using apple cider vinegar for complaints ranging from obesity to arthritis - without naming said authorities And the chief rationale behind apple cider vinegar's supposed wide ranging value is that, like apples, it contains Phosphorous, Chlorine, Potassium, Sodium, Magnesium, Calcium, Sulfur, Iron, Fluorine, Silicon, plus many trace elements And, Potassium Now, apple cider vinegar may in fact contain all of these things It certainly does contain potassium, but only very small amounts - about 15mg per tablespoon as compared to 159mg per apple, or 288mg for 10 rings of dried apple Cider vinegar has no sodium, no magnesium, and about 1mg of calcium and phosphorus Hardly noteworthy But that doesn't stop the book promoting apple cider vinegar as encouraging the health of veins and capillaries, and therefore heart health and blood pressure And whilst we're at it, it helps the blood clot better, though there is no explanation as to this mechanism By this rationale, tomorrow it will help colonize mars Presumably in the same mysterious way as it stores the fiber this ebook attributes cider vinegar as having But just as apple cider vinegar in fact has no fiber - unlike apples - so cider vinegar is not nearly as miraculous or mysterious as the ebook's logic Vinegar may in fact have promise in cleaning without having to resort to harsh chemicals And in may also be beneficial for some health purposes But it does not do nearly as much as is claimed And by creatively linking it to every ailment imaginable, it serves to turn herbal remedies into a bad joke Mars anyone?

It has come to my attention that wearing glasses stinks My father wears glasses, and i dont know if it is that I didnt want to hear it, or I just plain ignored him, but apparently he has been complaining about glasses since I was young Well pops, do something about it! Actually I can't be that rude, he has done something about it He now wears contacts and loves every minute of it He says it is WAY different than glasses With glasses, apparently, you can see clear straight ahead, but it is blurry peripherally The deal with contacts is, you don't have any blurry vision at all, which I hear is nice Contacts, however, still leave you with a few jobs These duties entail taking them in and out, replacing them if lost, and keeping them moist when they are not in When dad wakes up in the morning he still has bad vision, because you can not wear contacts overnight Well what else can he do?! EYE SURGERY! True, it's expensive, but after this it's like you've never worn glasses before in your life Your riding high on the "I can see clearly" cloud Eye surgery is low risk, so dont be too afraid to try it out That's the next step for dad I think In my opinion, your eyes are a pretty good investment

I write articles to inform you, the people, on matters that you would generally not know a whole lot about This article was scheduled to be about "Pepsin" Wow i cant even decode raw material about this stuff! But as i read through it i started thinking Alright, this is the simplest definition that I could find on the word "Pepsin" Here goes " Pepsin is a digestive protease released by the chief cells in the stomach that functions to degrade food proteins into peptides" What is that? This stuff grinds my gears becuase it is completely and entirely unnecessary As i read through pages and pages of what they call "information" on pepsin, several questions ran through my mind the first is simply "Why?!" Were we running out of small, simple words? It seems medicine has a tendency to create words long and unpronouncable Woops! I guess the word "unpronouncable" should be in medicine too But seriously doctor, come on And how many other people are doing things just like me, trying to educate the public on things that they would never bother with otherwise As if THEY could decode "pepsin" either! So i have come to the conclusion that historically, doctors have come up with massive medical terms to sound smarter than the average person Granted, they ARE smarter than the average person, but way to throw it in our face guys! Those doctors really grind my gears

Constipation in some ways has become the front of many jokes, but in reality it is more serious than that Consitipation can be extremely painful, and in some cases can result in bowel obstruction, which is not something that anyone wants to get into it Still laughing? For a quick definition: "Constipation is a condition of the digestive system where a person (or other animal) experiences hard feces that is difficult to eliminate" In most cases treatment is done by simply changing the dietary habits of the individual who is affected Sometimes other methods such as the use of laxatives, enemas and in really rare cases surgery is necessary to relieve the situation "Common constipation" makes the stool hard and difficult to void, which can create further complications with strain Straining the stool can cause hemorrhoids and anal fissures which is another issue It isn't unusual in these cases for the abdomen to become distended and diffusely tender and crampy, which can result in increased bowel sounds (just when you thought it wasn't going to get any worse) Many people will walk around telling you that you should be having at least one bowel movement a day this is untrue and it can be perfectly normal to have one bowel movement a week provided that their is no unusual symptoms associated with this movement This depends all on how much or little you eat, and also the rate at which your body is processing food among other factors
